Eskymos finish strong, top BR-H

Todd Rose | Daily Press Escanaba’s Maddy Monkevich (10) shoots over Bark River-Harris’ Allison Richer (center bottom) and BR-H’s Alaska Peterson (5) Friday at Bark River. Looking on for the Broncos is Cara Zawacki (13).

HARRIS — The fifth-ranked Escanaba girls found their shooting touch early here Friday night in a 60-47 basketball victory over the Bark River-Harris Broncos.

Esky sank eight 3-point field goals, including three in the first quarter of the regular-season finale, while building a 16-9 lead.

Sophomore guard Mari Bink then drained a pair of jump shots from behind the arc to start the second stanza, including one from the left corner to put the Eskymos up 22-6.

“Our outside shooting got us going,” said Esky coach Mike Beveridge. “We made quite a few 3s. We also played pretty good defense. We played the game we’ve been playing.”

Esky’s extended its cushion to 32-14 on a 20-foot set shot by sophomore guard Carney Salo with two minutes, 29 seconds left in the second frame.

The Broncos finished the second with a 5-0 run but still trailed 32-19 after a layup by junior Olivia Erickson 15 seconds before halftime.

Senior center Nicole Kamin started the third quarter with a steal and layup, giving Esky a 34-19 cushion.

The Eskymos then led by as much as 45-25 following a field goal by Kamin midway through the third.

“We played well,” said BR-H coach Matt Richer. “They’re a good team. They have a lot of firepower. Nicole got us in a lot of trouble. She’s not afraid to pass the ball. She’s kind of a step ahead of the other girls on the court, which makes for a hard cover.”

Esky (10-4) led 53-37 following a 22-foot jumper by junior guard Bailey Barron early in the fourth.

BR-H answered with an 8-0 run, trimming its deficit to 53-44 on a 17-foot set shot by junior forward Cara Zawacki.

The Broncos closed within 55-47 on a 20-foot set shot from the right wing by senior Alexis Berg with 2:05 remaining but were unable to get any closer.

“We subbed quite a bit which got us out of our rhythm a little, although the girls played hard,” said Beveridge. “I’m pleased with how we played in our third game this week. They’re a good team. They’re physical, and they play hard. They’re having a very nice season.”

The Broncos (14-4) trailed 12-9 after senior guard Allison RIcher’s jumper from top of the key with 1:34 left in the opening frame.

Junior Maddy Monkevich made it 14-9 on a putback with 14 seconds remaining in the first.

Kamin then set Barron up with a buzzer-beating layup to put the Eskymos up by seven after eight minutes.

Bink led the Eskymos with 15 points. Kamin added 14 points and three steals. Salo hit 12 points, and Barron had 11. Allison Richer was BR-H’s leader with nine points and four assists. Zawacki also had nine points, and senior center Kassidy Roll added eight.

The Eskymos committed just five turnovers, and the Broncos, who sank seven trifectas, had 14 miscues.

“We knew they were one of the better teams in the U.P.,” said coach Richer. “We knew Nicole would get her points. We tried to limit the number of touches by other girls. Our help defense was a little off in the first half, but the girls kept fighting.”

The Esky JVs finished 13-1 following a 43-35 victory over BR-H Friday night. The Eskymos also earned the Great Northern Conference title at 7-1.

Esky visits Gladstone for a Division 2 district opener Monday. BR-H travels to West Iron County for its D-3 opener Monday.
