POWERS — North Central’s Andie Arsenault will be reunited with sister Bree on the basketball court next year after she signed her letter of intent to play for the Bay College Norse Thursday morning in Powers.
“I’m really excited to play, especially with my sister again next year. It’s super exciting,” said Andie Arsenault. “This was like the first year I’ve not played with my sister, so it’s going to be pretty great to play with her again.”
Aside from playing with her sister again, Arsenault is excited for the challenge that the next level of competition brings.
“(I’m excited) just to advance to the next level and being able to play against great players,” she said. “I know the biggest difference is probably going to be the speed of things, so I’m really going to try working on getting faster, stronger and all that.”
Arsenault will be studying nursing at Bay. Like her expectations of the on the court side of things, Arsenault anticipates an increased challenge at the college level in the classroom.
“It’s going to be pretty tough, too, but I hope I make a good adjustment to it,” she said. “I have Bree to help and teammates that will probably be studying similar things.”
Wednesday night, Arsenault concluded her high school basketball career at North Central.
“It was pretty great (to get the season in),” she said. “Especially with the girls I got to play with this year, I love them. It was a good year.
“I’d like to thank my parents and my coaches, and all my teammates over the years.”
Jets coach Pete Schlenvogt shared Aresnault’s enthusiasm for the signing.
“I’m very excited for Andie going on and playing at the college level,” Schlenvogt said. “My son T.J. (Jets assistant coach) and I, we knew right away she was destined to play basketball at the next level.
“And she’s choosing Bay College for the right reasons, not just basketball. She wants to go into nursing, and they have a very good nursing program. So, she’s choosing it for academic reasons as well, and we’re proud of her for that.”
Schlenvogt described Arsenault as an all-around hard worker on and off the court.
“Bay is getting a very good player,” he said. “(She’s) definitely going to help them out with her energy and her work ethic … she’s a very good example of what to do off the court. With her ball-handling skills, her defensive skills and her shooting, she’s going to be a nice addition to Bay College.
“I told her she may be the best player I’ve had the opportunity to coach in 20 years. So, I’m really proud of her.”
Arsenault’s signing was the second local signing this week for Bay coach Matt Gregory — Gladstone’s Alaina Trudeau signed with Bay Tuesday.
“It’s an awesome time to have another local U.P. girl to be part of our program,” said Gregory. “I’ve been watching Andie, and I know the Arsenault family from having her older sister Bree attend and play. She just brings a strong game and very, very, hard work ethic. (She is) exactly the type of personality that we’re looking to build this program going forward.”
