Area runners earn All-U.P.
ESCANABA — The Upper Peninsula Cross Country Coaches Association selected two area runners for the Dream Team in this year’s voting, which was done virtually for the first time due to Covid-19.
Mid Peninsula senior Daisy Englund, a Ferris State University recruit, gained her berth by taking her second U.P. Division 3 championship and retaining her Skyline Central Conference title, and Gladstone sophomore Drew Hughes earned his first Mid-Peninsula and Great Northern Conference championships this season.
Sault Ste. Marie senior Jaron Wyma was selected Boys’ Runner of the Year, and Ishpeming freshman Lola Korpi was voted Girls’ Runner of the Year.
Wyma was crowned U.P. D-1 champion for the first time, and Korpi was undefeated until the D-2 Finals where she was runner-up to Ironwood junior Aundrea Stengard, also a Dream Team pick.
Also picked for the boys’ Dream Team were Houghton junior Eric Weiss, Marquette sophomores Carson and Colin Vanderschaaf, Newberry senior Ephram Evans, Ishpeming seniors Silas Broberg (two-time U.P. D-2 champ) and Joe King, Ewen-Trout Creek junior and D-3 champ Jonah Nordine and Chassell senior Kolson Kytta.
Additional girls’ selections include Houghton juniors Paige Sleeman and Ingrid Seagren, Negaunee junior Endla Harris, Marquette senior Olivia Moffitt, Kingsford seniors Melanie Wenzel and Sarah Kulas and Westwood sophomore Heidi Meglathery.
Sleeman captured her first title while leading the Gremlins to their first U.P. championship.
The Gremlins were named Large School Team of the Year, and Houghton’s Traci Welch was selected D-1 Coach of the Year.
Marquette’s boys, who went undefeated, retained their D-1 title and were selected Team of the Year.
The Dollar Bay boys were crowned D-3 champions for the first time and earned Small School Team of the Year honors. The Munising girls were tabbed Team of the Year after taking their first title in seven years.
Ishpeming’s P.J. Pruitt was picked D-2 Coach of the Year and Munising’s Mark Kinnunen and Chassell’s Marco Guidotti shared D-3 Coach of the Year honors.
Englund and junior teammate Landry Koski, who was crowned D-3 champion a year ago, received all-state recognition.
Other area girls’ all-state selections were Escanaba junior Ciara Ostrenga in D-1 and Superior Central’s Madisen Begovac and Rapid River senior Taylor VanOss in D-3.
Gladstone senior Samantha Strasler received All-U.P. recognition.
Area boys joining Hughes on the all-state list were Esky senior Derek Douglas, Manistique sophomore Grant Mason (D-2) and Rapid River senior Ishmael Hernandez.
