Short-handed Emeralds still have good individual performances
PICKFORD — The Manistique girls’ track and field team wasn’t at full strength, but still managed some solid individual performances in the Web Morrison Invitational here Saturday.
Pickford won both ends of its invitational. Team scores, however, weren’t available.
Emeralds’ senior Gwen Brewster won shot put at 32 feet, one inch and placed second in discus with a season-best throw of 83-8 on this cloudy and chilly day.
“This was just a fun meet for the girls and they all had fun,” Manistique coach Erik Mason said. “Gwen did real good out there. She really takes charge and John Maline is helping the girls work on technique. We had a chance to try different things and had a lot of PRs (personal records).”
Manistique freshman Harper Andersen added a first in long jump (13-6) and sophomore Alexandria Scheffer placed third (12-8½).
Stephenson junior Caitlyn Erickson won shot (87-2) and was runner-up in disc (29-11) and freshman Aunna Havelka added a first in the 300-meter hurdles in 54.83 seconds.
Manistique freshman Leah Joslin took second in the 300 hurdles (57.47) and classmates Keria Hart placed third in pole vault (7-6) and Audrina Kaiser was fourth in the 100 hurdles (21.41).
Pickford senior Talya Schreiber broke the 11-minute barrier in the 3200 in a meet and school-record 10:53.94. She also won the 1600 in a personal-best 5:17.73, the 800 (2:28.63) and anchored the winning 3200 relay.
“This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” she said. “I didn’t think I was going to do it today, but once I got into the race I thought this was the day I was going to break 11. I think running with the boys helped me get that time.”
The Bowling Green (Ohio) University recruit hung with boys’ champion Ethan Snyder for seven laps before the Cedarville-DeTour junior gained separation in the final lap en route to a season-best 10:49.48.
Manistique junior Sam Moose took boys’ shot put (42-6) and was second in discus (119-7).
“I think Sam did a nice job throwing shot and disc,” Emeralds’ coach Cody Kangas said. “Overall, it was a good day for us.”
The Emeralds won the 400 relay (49.82) and were runners-up in the 800 (1:45.02) and Stephenson copped the 1600 relay (3:56.37).
Senior Faith Cappaert, who anchored the 1600 relay, was runner-up in the 200 (29.68), 800 (2:37.82) and 1600 (5:55.89).
Sophomore Kyle DeKeyser, part of the winning relay, placed fourth in the open 400 (1:00.17).
The Emeralds are hosting their Kiwanis Invitational today at 3:45.
