BR-H wins on Senior Night

HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris Broncos made Senior Night an enjoyable one here Monday in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-7) volleyball victory over the North Central Jets.

A five-point service run by sophomore Carley Varoni helped the Broncos take a 6-1 lead in the third set.

Following a service error, the Broncos got a sideout on a kill by senior Lexi Berg and classmate Kassidy Roll added a kill for an 8-2 cushion.

The Broncos continued to extend their lead before a nine-point run by Berg gave them an insurmountable 20-5 advantage.

In the second set, the Broncos led 20-11 following a Jets’ hitting error.

The Broncos then secured the decision behind a five-point run, including two aces, by junior Tressa Ives.

Ives, who set the school record for career aces in a 3-0 victory over North Dickinson last Tuesday, ran her total to 95 within that run.

“We started slow tonight,” said BR-H coach Jennifer Ives. “To North Central’s credit, they were scrappy. I thought they really played well in the first set.”

The Jets were within 17-15 in the opener before Varoni got a kill for a sideout and three-point lead.

Junior Alaska Peterson provided the Broncos with a kill that was followed by an ace by Berg for a 20-15 cushion.

North Central was still within 21-16 before the Broncos decided that set with a four-point run.

“I was real proud of the way the girls competed in the first set,” said Jets’ coach Rick Mick. “For not playing for 2 1/2 weeks, they really impressed me with the way they came out. I thought we’d be rusty after the layoff, but maybe we’re not as rusty as we thought. They fought hard.”

Berg and Varoni hit eight aces apiece. Ives, Peterson and senior Allison Richer had four each.

“We started serving a little better in Game 2,” said coach Ives. “Overall, we started to pick it up. Then we started all our seniors in the third set, and they had fun.”

Peterson also had four kills, and Varoni had 10 assists. Senior Andie Arsenault led the Jets with three kills.

“They’re a good serving team,” said Mick. “Unfortunately, they caught us in a vulnerable rotation, and they’re very good at finding the holes. We definitely ran out of gas. A couple times, we had to adjust to what they were doing.”

North Central’s Shea LaCoursier left the match with a right ankle injury.

BR-H, which won the JV match, hosts Manistique tonight. North Central hosts Stephenson tonight.
