Gladstone JV FB
NEGAUNEE — Negaunee, using a well balanced offense sparked by big plays by wide receiver Gavin Downey and quarterback Easton Palomaki, rallied late as the Miners defeated the Gladstone Braves JVs 13-8.
For the Gladstone freshmen on the JV team, it was their first loss after two unbeaten seasons at the junior high level while the sophomores on the combined team have shown big strides in its first two games.
Defensive plays by the Braves’ Trenton Cartwright, Ethan Jensen, Jacob Perryman along with Nathan Young held the Miners to a scoreless first quarter. Action picked up in the second as Negaunee scored on a 10-yard touchdown pass to put the Miners up 7-0.
Gladstone responded with a 71-yard TD run by Young who outran the entire Negaunee secondary.
Trailing 7-6, the Braves went for the two-point conversion. Gladstone quarterback Braden Sundquist tossed a high pass to a jumping Eli Berthaume in the corner of the endzone for two points and an 8-7 lead.
The second half was all defense as both teams dug in. With eight minutes to go, Negaunee scored on a one-yard run, and then Gladstone moved to midfield but were stopped as the clock ran out.
Andrew Sargent, Frank Carlson, Vinny Howes and Caleb Meyer also turned in good defensive performances.
The Braves JVs will be home this Thursday for a 6 pm game playing the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils.
