Bay softball sweeps tripleheader
TITUSVILLE, Fla. — The Bay College women snapped a four-game losing streak by winning three softball games here Monday.
They opened with a 12-3 victory in six innings over Itasca Community College of Grand Rapids, Minn., then defeated St. Cloud (Minn.) Technical and Community College 7-4 and needed only five innings to beat Macomb Community College 16-7.
The Norse, fueled by Lexi Chaillier’s two-run triple and Kaitlyn Hardwick’s solo home run, grabbed a 5-0 lead in the second inning of the opener.
Itasca scored three in its half of the second, but the Norse responded with three runs for an 8-3 cushion in the third.
Richelle Vandeville clubbed a leadoff homer in the fourth before the Norse, fueled by Chailler’s two-run homer, added three in the sixth.
Chaillier collected three hits and drove in five runs. Hardwick also had three hits to go with two RBIs.
Brittany Schwartz, who picked up the win, struck out six, walked six and allowed six hits.
In the second game, St. Cloud scored on Laura Skiba’s three-run homer in the first.
Bay got a run back in its half of the first and gained a 4-3 lead on Chaillier’s two-run shot in the second.
Madison Griffin’s single gave Bay a 5-4 lead in the fourth. The Norse then gained a two-run cushion on an error before Griffin ended the scoring on a leadoff homer in the sixth.
Eden Oswald got the complete-game win, striking out 10, walking five and giving up five hits.
In the finale, Macomb scored four times in the top of first before the Norse answered with five in their half of the inning, taking the lead on a three-run homer by Taylor Hunter.
Griffin’s sacrifice fly gave the Norse a 6-4 lead in the second and Korey Kaukola’s double made it 7-4 in the third, setting the stage for a fourth-inning outburst.
Chaillier homered again in the fourth and finished with three hits. Hardwick also had three hits. Hunter added two hits and four RBIs. Griffin also drove in four runs.
Oswald earned another victory, this time striking out two, walking two and surrendering six hits.
The Norse face St. Clair Community College in a twinbill Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.
