Wolves take down BR-H in overtime

Austin Hemmingson | Daily Press Carney-Nadeau’s Tessa Wagner drives against Bark River-Harris defenders Grace Peterson (30) and Riley Arndt (22) during Friday’s game in Harris.

HARRIS — The Carney-Nadeau girls seized the momentum when in mattered most here Friday night in a 49-44 overtime basketball victory over the Bark River-Harris Broncos.

Senior Riley Arndt split a pair of free throws to give BR-H a 44-43 lead with two minutes, seven seconds left in the overtime.

C-N, however, took the lead for good at 1:45 when senior Sandra Boulton drained a set shot from in front of the free throw line.

Senior Giselle Laurila then sealed the verdict by hitting four free throws in a match-up between these Skyline Central Conference teams.

“It was a well-played game,” said C-N coach Ken Linder. “It was a game of runs. During the break (after regulation) we told the girls we just needed to come out with good intensity on defense. We got some big turnovers in overtime and Giselle got those clutch free throws.”

Senior Grace Peterson began the overtime with a layup, giving the Broncos a 43-41 lead.

Junior Taylor Kedsch then tied the score on an 18-foot set shot from the left baseline with 2:40 remaining.

“(Kedsch) had the big shot of the game in the overtime,” said BR-H coach Matt Richer. “We wanted one of the other girls to beat us. But give her credit, she hit the shot.”

Boulton drove the baseline for a layup with 67 seconds left in regulation to put the Wolves up 41-38.

Sophomore Cara Zawacki then sank a 21-foot jump shot from the right wing to force overtime.

“We thought we had them a couple times, then we kind of relaxed on defense,” said Richer. “We have a team that’s real emotional with a lot of highs and lows. The girls worked hard. I thought we played a real good second half. Only, we missed free throws at the wrong time. We’re learning. I’m still learning about them and the conference. Cara’s 3 was a big shot. That set us up for overtime.”

Neither team led by more than six points in a contest in which both were content to set up in a half-court offense.

The Broncos led 35-29 following a lay-in by Arndt late in the third quarter.

Boulton drained an eight-foot set shot and a pair of gifters to bring the Wolves within 35-33 near the end of the third and tied the contest on a layup early in the fourth.

BR-H regained the lead at 38-35 on a 22-foot set shot from the right wing by junior Allison Richer before the Wolves answered with a 6-0 run.

Boulton finished with 20 points. Sophomore center Tessa Wagner scored 12 points to go with eight blocked shots and Laurila finished with 11 points.

“Sandra had a real good game,” said Linder. “She couldn’t miss in the first half. This was a pretty dominating performance for her. When Tessa puts her hands up on defense and deflects shots, it steps up our game. We have some depth this year. Teams can’t wear us down as in the past. It feels real good to win one here. They really took it to us here last year.”

Peterson paced the Broncos with 12 points. Arndt hit 11 and Richer added 10.

“Tessa created some match-up problems for us,” said coach Richer. “She had one block in overtime that pretty much sealed the game. We had wide open, uncontested layups, but the girls were still looking for her. She affects what you want to do.”

The Wolves (5-3) committed 17 turnovers. The Broncos (4-3) had 13.

C-N, which also won the jayvee contest 42-35, travels to Munising next Friday. BR-H hosts the Mustangs Tuesday.
