Rapid River win first regional championship in three years

RAPID RIVER — Freshman Evonna LaCosse had a hand in four firsts here Wednesday, helping the Rapid River girls capture their first Division 3 regional track and field championship in three years.

She took the 800-meter run in two minutes, 44.41 seconds, 1600 (6:09.02) and 3200 (13:09.51) and helped the Rockets take the 3200 relay (12:17.29).

The Rockets scored 70 points and Superior Central edged Big Bay de Noc 36-32 for runner-up honors.

Sophomore Victoria Coppock, also part of the winning relay, added a first in the 100 hurdles (17.73).

“We looked at the sheet going in and it looked like we had a chance,” Rockets girls’ coach Greg Rubick said. “I think this gives us a little momentum going into the (Skyline Central) conference meet. This was a nice reward for all the work they put in and a confidence builder for Evonna. All the work she put in was justified.”

The Rapid River boys also won with 82½ points. They were followed by Rock Mid Peninsula 41½ and Superior Central 35.

“All the guys stepped up,” Rockets boys’ coach Steve Ostrenga said. “We had a lot of personal and season-best times and all the relays made it in (to the Upper Peninsula Finals). Taking three places in high jump gave us some big points and going 1-2 in the 400 helped us out.”

Sophomore Destiny Bleau continued to lead the Big Bay girls with victories in the 100 (12.83), 200 (26.12) and 400 (1:00.87) and long jump (5-0). Classmate Victoria Durrance won shot put (32-3) and senior Caragan Thill added a first in 300 hurdles (52.25).

Mid Pen senior Hope Brunngraeber won shot (108-4) and was runner-up in shot (30-6).

Rapid River senior Aubrey Olson placed second in disc (98-2).

Superior Central sophomore, who took first in long jump (14-4), helped the Cougars take the 400 relay (57.46).

Eighth-grader Camille Richer was Holy Name’s leader, taking second in the 100 hurdles (19.63) and 300s (56.67).

Rapid River junior Alex Shiverdecker won boys’ discus with a personal-best throw of 115-1 and helped the Rockets take the 400 relay (48.59) and senior Greg Taylor became the winner in 110 hurdles (17.35).

Superior Central junior Will Spranger was a double-winner, taking the 100 (11.61) and 200 (23.62) and classmate Connor Blomgren captured shot put (40-3) and placed second in disc (113-5).

Stiglitz also ran a PB while taking second in the 1600 (5:12.68).

Sophomore Nate Stielstra provided Engadine with its lone first in the 800 in a personal-best 2:14.09.

At Ishpeming, sophomore Devin Arteaga became the first Hannahville athlete to become a regional champion, taking the boys’ 400 in 55.68.

Powers North Central sophomore Myles Nehring took shot with a personal-best toss of 38-1½ and classmate Pryor LaBonte captured long jump (19-7).
