Playing some defense

CARNEY — It’s no secret when you play the North Central Jets you have to stop the Arsenault sisters. The Carney-Nadeau girls did a masterful job of that and got 21 points from Sandra Boulton in a 49-25 Skyline Central Conference basketball victory Monday night in Carney.

After Andie Arsenault scored on a running bank shot on the first possession of the game, the Wolves finished the first quarter on a 9-2 run.

Boulton then took over in the second, scoring 11 of Carney’s 12 points as the Wolves went into halftime leading 21-8.

“She was just really strong going to the basket like always,” C-N coach Ken Linder said. “She really knows how to get to the basket, even from the high post. She shot the ball pretty well from mid-range so that helped, too.”

The Wolves (9-3, 8-3 SC) continued to frustrate the Jets (7-4, 7-3 SC) with their physical defense in the second half and built their lead up to 38-17 after scoring 17 points in the third quarter.

“It was an eight-deep performance,” Linder said. “Taylor Kedsch had an outstanding game, Haley Ernest (played good defense), and Jules Thoune gave us some good minutes. It was just a good team effort.”

Arsenault was limited to just eights points, being held to single figures for the first time this season. Her sister, Bree Arsenault, scored just five points, being held under 10 points for just the fourth time this season.

“We know North Central pretty well … they’re our neighbor so we know them,” Linder said. “I thought Giselle (Laurila) did a really nice job on (Andie) to start out with, but then she got in foul trouble early so I had Haley come in off the bench and she did a really good job on her. That was our main concern going in — trying to keep her in check — and we did a pretty good job of that.”

Alex Neville led the Jets with 10 points and four rebounds.

The Jets committed 18 turnovers, shot 9 for 39 from the field and 6 for 15 from the free throw line.

“This is one of our worst games we’ve played. I don’t know what the deal was, but we weren’t focused on the game,” Jets coach Lee Vincent said. “It was kind of a rougher game than we play. They got away with all the bumps, they had hands on us, they played physical and they played a lot better than us. That’s all I can say.”

Boulton added four rebounds and three steals for the Wolves, who committed 11 turnovers and shot 20 for 43 from the field. Tessa Wagner was limited to a season-low six points but grabbed 12 rebounds.

C-N, which won the JV game 30-23, hosts Forest Park next Monday. The Jets host Superior Central Thursday.
