Braves’ swimmers fall in dual meet

NEGAUNEE — The Gladstone boys and girls swim teams participated in a dual meet with Ishpeming and Negaunee here Tuesday, dropping both decisions. The girls fell 93-71 and the boys fell 51-42.

The girls team won six of 11 events. Lydia Tembreull continued her good swimming by winning the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle. Senior Emily Marenger took first in 500 free after not swimming in it since she was a freshman. She also placed third in 50 free. Alexis Marenger won the 100 breaststroke and placed second in 100 butterfly. Megan Fritz placed second in 50 free and third in 100 back. Isabelle Houseman took a second in 200 free.

The relay team of Emily Marenger, Tembreull, Alexis Marenger and Fritz won the 200 medley relay, while the team of Emily Marenger, Alexis Marenger, Tembreull and Houseman won the 200 free relay.

Alex Williams was a double-winner on the boys side, taking the 200 IM and 500 free. Camden Griggs took a couple of second places in 50 free and 100 back.

The relay team of Williams, Griggs, Rodney Van Brocklin and Wilson Zhao won the 400 free relay and placed second in the 200 medley relay.

“This was the first time we have competed head-to-head with Ishpeming and Negaunee, and the swimmers did great,” Braves’ coach Tom Desy said. “Both the boys team and girls team dropped close decisions in the meet. We have a small team and could not fill all the events, which did impact the final scores. I decided to switch events up for some of the girls and they responded well.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
