BR-H cruises past Rapid River, 46-21

HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris girls basketball team was all smiles after rolling over the Rapid River Rockets 46-21 Monday in Skyline Central Conference action in Bark River.

The Rockets (5-6, 5-5 SCC) were first on the board with a layup from Natalie Belanger just 25 seconds into the first quarter.

Ten seconds later, the Broncos (6-6, 5-3 SCC) answered with a jumper from Makena Lockwood, and Grace Peterson gave them the lead by going 1 of 2 from the free throw line shortly after. Once they had the lead, they didn’t give it up for the remainder of the game.

“We played really good early,” Broncos coach Matt Richer said. “We did a lot of nice things and hit some shots. It was a real fun game for the girls. I was really pleased with how we played against Escanaba (Friday), and I think it carried over to tonight.”

The Rockets had opportunities to gain some momentum at the free throw line, but they went just 1 for 8 in the first quarter.

“You just have to regroup after that,” Rockets coach Scott Goodacre said. “There’s not much you can do other than keep shooting. We’ll just keep going.”

Bark River’s Sierra Debelak capped the quarter with a triple on an assist from Aspen Fredrick to lead 15-5 at the end of the first.

The Broncos continued rolling in the second, limiting the Rockets to five points.

“It’s fun to get a game like that after so many close losses we’ve had over the last few weeks,” Richer said. “It’s nice to see the girls smiling again and having fun out there, especially since it didn’t come down to the fourth quarter. We could just relax and have fun.”

Bark River extended its lead to 33-10 at halftime after two last-minute triples from Fredrick and Aliison Richer and a free throw from Debelak.

“I thought we played pretty good defense,” Goodacre said. “We were definitely better tonight than our last game against them (a 57-41 loss Dec. 19). Last time we had around 16 losses in transition, and tonight, I don’t think it was even close to that. We got the ball back like we wanted to but we just couldn’t get the ball to fall.”

The Broncos were led by Cara Zawacki with 11 points.

Cecilia Pilon led the Rockets with six points.

Bark River, which won the JV game 64-21, hosts North Central next Monday. Rapid River hosts Stephenson the same day.

“It’s another rivalry game, and we’ve got a week to prepare,” coach Richer said. “Coach (Lee) Vincent does a good job over (at North Central). There’s some tough guards we’re going to have to deal with.”
