Braves’ Mathews takes fourth in XC meet

DAVISBURG, Mich. — Gladstone’s Giovanni Mathews shined in the Holly Invitational cross country meet here Saturday, placing fourth in the Division 3 race.

The sophomore harrier covered the 3.1-mile course at Springfield Oaks County Park in 17 minutes, 13.3 seconds.

He was followed by freshman Drew Hughes in 21st (17:59.4), sophomore Andrew Hanson 31st (18:22), junior Blake Krouth 59th (19:37.3) and sophomore Andrew Bracket 79th (21:08.2).

Downstate Armada took the team title with 37 points, followed by St. Clair 75, Flint Powers 141 and Sault Ste. Marie and Gladstone 150.

St. Clair junior Jack Pennewell was the individual winner at 16:36.4.

The Flint Powers girls were crowned champions with 63 points, followed by St. Clair 88 and Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard 118. Sault placed seventh at 196 and Gladstone was 13 with 345.

Richmond senior Maddy Bean won in 19:20.2.

Sophomore Jamisyn Bergeron was Gladstone’s leader in 43rd (23:13.4), followed by classmates Samantha Strasler 47th (23:22.7), Lilly Karl 57th (24:04.8), Aleyna Wetthuhn 64th (24:48.2) and Chloe Hanson 65th (24:48.8).

The Braves resume in Thursday’s Stephenson Invitational.
