Follow the science

EDITOR: Once upon a time... that’s right following the science has become a fairy tale. Knowing this is an opinion page, obviously, I am going to share my opinion in this article. However, I’d like to start by actually following some science that, I believe, all would agree with. Case in point: Once upon a time smoking was allowed everywhere and in every enclosed space imaginable, including bars, restaurants, and airplanes, virtually everywhere. It is no secret that those who did not smoke hated inhaling/smelling second-hand smoke. Eventually, the science said, “second-hand smoke ...

Enbridge Line 5

EDITOR: After Enbridge has polluted the world’s greatest supply of freshwater and the Great Lakes what are we supposed to drink? Enbridge Canadian oil? Does Enbridge think we all are blind dumb and ignorant and must be bombarded with full-page color ads in the Daily Press is telling their ventures of investing billions in clean energy. If that is true then remove these pipelines from under the Straits of Mackinac in safeguard our drinking water. Trying to prove you are not just worried about your own Canada profits and could care less about the people and God’s country you would be ...

Mass shootings

EDITOR: In recent weeks I have read two letters regarding mass shootings in the Daily Press. The second writer accused the first writer of using NRA propaganda and then she goes on to write her letter using emotion and limited firearm knowledge. First of all according to the justice department long guns are used in 3% of all firearm homicides in the U.S. Of that 3% only a fraction are so called assault weapons. So even if we were able to eliminate all assault type weapons from the U.S. soil the U.S. firearm murder rate would not change. The rest of the letter is full of irrelevant and ...

Response to letter

EDITOR: I appreciate you publishing my letters, and am thankful for you printing the response to one from Rita Wickham contesting some of my points re/mass shootings. I’ll expand on some points. Propaganda, (lets just stick w/”assault weapons”) was used extensively in reportage ignoring defined facts as to what an assault weapon is, or is not. I contend and provide evidence the weapon used was not an assault weapon, Wickham, without defining it, insists it is (please honor us with a definition). Wickham also says that carbine “… shoots well enough for it’s cheap … ...

Fact over assumption

EDITOR: I wish to respond to Ed Fluery’s letter in which he stated that myself, Commissioner Barron and Commissioner Petersen conspired to annex property from Escanaba Township into Cornell Township. Nothing could be further from the truth, the issue hasn’t been brought to us yet, this means we have yet to discuss the issue. I’m not sure where Mr. Flurry gets his information. He is entitled to his own opinion, but not entitled to his own facts. There are five members on the commission. Myself, Bob Barron, and Bob Peterson, haven’t conspired to do anything. He neglected to ...

Airport issue

EDITOR: I regularly attend airport board meetings, which occur monthly at the Delta County Airport. Ms. Andrea Numillen, our Delta County Airport manager, has been without an assistant manager since February 23. On March 13, the Airport Advisory Board unanimously voted in favor of a resolution for compensation for Ms. Numillen and requested it to be forwarded to the board of commissioners, as she was doing the work of two jobs. Precedence had been set by the board of commissioners by paying our interim county administrator two full wages, that of administrator and that of ...
