Geraldine Ruth (Korinek) Labre

GLADSTONE — Geraldine Ruth (Korinek) Labre, 93, of Gladstone, passed away peacefully at Lakeview Assisted Living on June 15 with family by her side.

She was born on Sept. 3, 1925 in Menominee, the only daughter of Hilda (Swanson) and Norman Korinek. She attended Menominee High School and graduated in the Class of ’43. Shortly after graduation, the family moved to Gladstone and she started working for the Farmers Home Administration. She moved on from the FHA and started working for the Hiawatha National Forest Administration office in Escanaba and enjoyed a long and interesting career before retiring. Two of the highlights of her career were working payroll and administrative duties at the Seney Fire and the big Yellowstone Fire.

It was a New Year’s Eve in Little Mike’s Bar in Escanaba that she met the love of her life, John “Jack” Labre. He swept her off her feet and they were married on Sept. 9, 1950. It was a short honeymoon as Jack was called to duty for the Korean War. He safely returned and they started their life together in Gladstone and raised three daughters. They shared 64 years together until Jack passed away at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette.

Our mom and dad spent many years exploring the U.S., Europe, and the Caribbean and enjoyed wintering in Florida and Texas.

Geri also loved playing golf with Jack and their friends at the Gladstone Golf Club. She loved Ladies Day and she was involved in many shenanigans on those days. She played in a cribbage league and won some tournaments with her partner. She was an avid reader and enjoyed taking walks with her many Dachshunds over the years.

Geri is survived by her three girls, Susan (Tom) Creten, Nancy (Richard) Gaudino and Janet (Mick) Bruno; grandchildren Scott (Susie) Creten, Kelly (Chris) Coleman and Danielle Labre-Johnston; great-grandchildren Taytem, Kelsey, Hailey, Olivia and Lauren.

Visitation will be held at the First Lutheran Church in Gladstone on Wednesday, June 19 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. with a church service to follow.

A luncheon will be served in the church hall following services.

We must thank and mention the nurses and staff at Lakeview Assisted Living in Gladstone for the many years of care they gave our mom and to the nurses and staff of hospice who made her last days comfortable. Bless you all.
