Man in custody after woman’s death

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — A man has been taken into custody after the body of a woman was discovered at a residence in Sault Ste. Marie.

At 9:53 p.m. Tuesday, Chippewa County Central Dispatch received a 911 call from a residence at 810 Minneapolis Street stating a woman and man subject at the address had both been cut. While officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department were enroute, it was reported the man had left the scene on foot and was injured.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered a body that was later identified as Hayley Anne Smith, 27, of Sault Ste. Marie

Additional responding officers located the man a couple blocks away and took him into custody. The man was transported to the War Memorial Hospital for a severe laceration to one of his arms. He is currently receiving medical attention and remains in police custody.

The Michigan State Police Crime Lab from Grayling responded to the scene to assist with the ongoing investigation. Police are not releasing the name of the suspect, pending his arraignment in court, and no further details were available as of press time.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Department was assisted by the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department, Sault Ste. Marie Department of Public Works, Chippewa County Central Dispatch, Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police-Sault Ste. Marie Post, Michigan State Police Crime Lab-Grayling, and the Sault Tribe Police Department.
