Virus cases stabilize locally

ESCANABA — As of Friday, the U.P. had 15,276 confirmed cases of COVID-19 — up only 67 cases since Thursday. The peninsula has recorded 3,648 probable cases, 345 deaths and 79 probable deaths linked to the disease, according to state officials.

The figure does not include prisoners in the Michigan Department of Corrections.

According to the state’s county-by-county count issued Friday, Delta County had a total of 2,570 confirmed COVID-19 cases (up two from Thursday) and 441 probable cases (up one case since Thursday. The number of deaths in the county appears to have stabilized, with no change in the number of deaths over the past several days. As of Friday, 60 deaths and 18 probable deaths had been recorded in the county.

Menominee County added a single death Friday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 1,547. No additional probable cases, deaths, or probable deaths were recorded. As of Friday 245 probable cases, 34 deaths and two probable deaths had been recorded in the county.

No changes were made to the COVID-19 numbers for Schoolcraft County Friday. Schoolcraft County had 223 confirmed cases, 22 probable cases, three deaths and one probable death.

The LMAS District Health Department, which serves Luce, Mackinac, Alger and Schoolcraft County has reported 1,025 recovered cases or probable cases, as of Thursday. However, more recoveries are possible, as the LMAS Health District only reports their cases weekly.

Elsewhere in the peninsula, Alger County had 224 confirmed cases, 140 probable cases, one death and two probable deaths; Baraga County had 479 confirmed cases, 90 probable cases, and 29 deaths; Chippewa County had 664 confirmed cases, 969 probable cases, 16 deaths and two probable deaths; Dickinson County had 2,056 confirmed cases, 214 probable cases, 56 deaths and 14 probable deaths; Gogebic County had 769 confirmed cases, 304 probable cases, 16 deaths and 25 probable deaths; Houghton County had 1,832 confirmed cases, 454 probable cases, 27 deaths and seven probable deaths; Iron County had 819 confirmed cases, 62 probable cases, 32 deaths and five probable deaths; Keweenaw County had 91 confirmed cases, 17 probable cases, one death and one probable death; Luce County had 128 confirmed cases, and 69 probable cases; Mackinac County had 270 confirmed cases, 130 probable cases, and three deaths; Marquette County had 3,316 confirmed cases, 461 probable cases, 52 deaths and one probable death; and Ontonagon County had 288 confirmed cases, 30 probable cases, 15 deaths and one probable death.

The state does not include infections or deaths within the Michigan Department of Corrections system in county-by-county counts, however, as of Thursday, the MDOC had 22,157 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 132 deaths and two probable deaths statewide according to state officials. Of those cases, 658 were active infections.

In the U.P., Alger Correctional Facility has had 140 confirmed cases, 10 of which are currently active infections with 20 confirmed staff; Baraga Correctional Facility has had 168 confirmed cases, with 25 active infections, one death with 72 confirmed staff; Chippewa Correctional Facility has had 1,799 confirmed cases, 755 of which were active, six deaths and 177 confirmed staff; Kinross Correctional Facility has had 1,134 confirmed cases, 120 of which are active, eight deaths with nine confirmed staff; Marquette Branch Prison has had 849 confirmed case, 12 of which are active with 175 confirmed staff; and Newberry Correctional Facility has had 853 confirmed cases, 40 of which are active, one death and 67 confirmed staff infections.
