Menominee County voters vote on sheriff, millage issues

MENOMINEE — Menominee County voters weighed in Tuesday on a series of millage requests and a hotly contested race to be the Republican candidate for sheriff on the November ballot.

Joe Grinsteiner and Patrick James Armbrust faced off to represent the GOP in the sheriff’s race. Ultimately, Armbrust was chosen by those voting on the Republican primary ballot, receiving 1,294 votes (54%) to Grinsteiner’s 1,120 (46%).

The race drew attention even outside of Menominee County after Grinsteiner was charged with three counts of False Designation of Incumbency earlier this year. The charges were related to the ways Grinsteiner and his campaign presented him as if he was already the seated sheriff through social media, t-shirts, and a billboard featuring the logo of the apolitical Michigan Sheriff’s Association — which can only be used by Michigan county sheriff members active in law enforcement.

“This is a nothing-burger. My attorney’s got it handled, and I tell you what, there has been nothing that we did wrong,” Grinsteiner said in a nearly four-minute-long video posted on Facebook after the charges were issued.

Armbrust will now go on to the November General Election, where he will face off against Democrat Michael T. Holmes.

Voters also weighed in on a series of millage proposals across the township.
