MANISTIQUE — The Schoolcraft County Courthouse was closed Wednesday after a driver — who apparently had a grievance with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services — did donuts around its front mailbox early that morning.

At 5 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24, officers from Manistique Public Safety were dispatched to the courthouse for a report of malicious destruction of property. Officers determined a vehicle had driven onto the courthouse’s front lawn. The driver then intentionally spun the vehicle in circles, crossing over the grass, sidewalk, on-street parking area and encircling a mail dropbox and flagpole — causing major damage to the grass. Further investigation found the suspect vehicle was a white full-size Chevrolet Silverado crew cab pick-up truck.

A sign was also left on courthouse property Wednesday. The sign indicated the suspect was upset with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, which has offices in the courthouse building.

There was no entry made or damage done to the courthouse building as part of this incident. The courthouse remained closed for the rest of the day Wednesday for investigative purposes. It will resume normal operations today.

A post to the Facebook page “93rd District Court” stated that matters on the court’s docket for Wednesday would be rescheduled as soon as possible and apologized for the inconvenience.

No further information on the incident was released by Manistique Public Safety Wednesday.
