Man gets prison term for dealing meth in Esky

ESCANABA — A Louisiana man has been sentenced to a prison term for dealing methamphetamine in Delta County.

Daniel Paul Kurth, 49, of Eunice, Louisiana was sentenced to 8 years to 20 years in prison. Kurth was sentenced following the entry of a guilty plea to Delivery of Methamphetamine and Possession of Methamphetamine.

On March 10, 2019, officers from the Delta County Sheriff’s Office and Escanaba Department of Public Safety began an investigation at the Eagle’s Nest Motel in the city of Escanaba. Upon entry to the hotel room, multiple individuals, including Daniel Kurth were arrested. A search of the hotel room located drug paraphernalia. A small amount of methamphetamine was located in the pant’s pocket of Kurth. Subsequent search warrants were executed at the Country Hearth Motel and the Sunset Motel in the city of Escanaba. During the search of the Sunset Motel, it was determined the room was rented to Daniel Kurth’s fiance. The search located approximately $4,300 and over three ounces of methamphetamine among items belonging to Kurth.

While incarcerated in the Delta County Jail, Kurth asked his fiance and his fiance’s son to “take the rap” for him. Kurth also arranged for the delivery through the United States Postal Service of methadone from his fiance to a Delta County resident.

At the sentencing, Chief Assistant Prosecutor Wickman emphasized the large amount of methamphetamine that was seized, specifically, that at that time, it was the largest methamphetamine seizure in Delta County history.

“With the large amount of methamphetamine Mr. Kurth brought into our community, as well as his continued criminal behavior in the jail, has earned the Defendant a long prison sentence,” said Wickham.

Starting at $3.50/week.
