Escanaba council OKs appropriation ordinance

ESCANABA — The Escanaba City Council approved an appropriations ordinance, set the city’s millage rate, and passed a tax levy ordinance for Escanaba’s 2020-21 fiscal year on second reading. Motions on these items were approved unanimously during a special meeting held virtually Thursday afternoon.

Council is required to approve these items before the start of each fiscal year. In Escanaba, the new fiscal year will begin on July 1.

The appropriations ordinance included a millage rate of 17 mills ($17 per $1,000 of taxable value), which will generate an estimated $5,427,200 in taxes. The rate was unchanged from previous years.

Public hearings for the appropriations ordinance and the tax levy ordinance were held before council voted on these topics. No comments were made during the hearings.
