ESCANABA — Delta County’s first positive COVID-19 case was an employee of the Delta County Airport, according the county officials.

“On Sunday, March 29, Public Health Delta/Menominee Counties reported its first positive COVID-19 case in Delta County. The Delta County Airport has received information from the positive individual’s employer that she works at the Delta County Airport,” stated Delta County Administrator Emily DeSalvo.

The health department was notified by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services of the presumptive positive test result Sunday.

“There is currently no specific treatment for COVID-19,” Robert S. Van Howe, MD, Interim Medical Director for PHDM said in the release. “Many people who get COVID-19 experience mild, cold-like illness, but in some cases people experience severe illness, hospitalization, and/or death.”

The health department is in the process of identifying and contacting people who have had close contact with the individual.

Those who are concerned they may have a COVID-19 infection should contact their healthcare professional with their concerns. Healthcare professionals will make arrangements for evaluation that can minimize the risk of viral transmission and reduce the strain on the healthcare system.

The best thing that the public can do to protect themselves and others is follow the Governor’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order including the following:

– Travel ONLY when necessary.

– Stay home when sick.

– Avoid contact with sick people.

– Wash hands frequently and for at least 20 seconds.

– Avoid touching your face.

– Regularly disinfect commonly touched surfaces.

– Follow suggested guidelines for social distancing

For social distancing, the following procedures are recommended:

– Keep six feet between yourself and others when possible.

– Avoid public places at their busiest times.

– Work from home when possible.
