Kindergarten center gets ‘official’ signage

Deborah Prescott | Daily Press The newly designed Webster Kindergarten Center sign stands in front of the school in Escanaba. Employees of the school and Meier’s Signs collaborated to create a design that reflected a feeling of fun and youthfulness. The sign and a few security window peels were installed mid-December by Meier’s Signs. Work will continue in the spring when temperatures are warmer.

ESCANABA — In mid-December, the installation of a new sign made the establishment of the Webster Kindergarten Center ‘official’.

“We are grateful and very proud to have the new sign branding our Webster Kindergarten Center – ‘Home of the Little ‘Mos’,” said Webster Kindergarten Center Principal Krista Johnson.

Meier’s Signs of Escanaba designed the sign and provided Johnson with a draft.

“The inspiration of the design came from listening to Krista Johnson and her staff,” said Meier’s Signs Owner Tim McIntyre. “We collaborated and decided how the lighted sign would look.”

Staff at Webster and Meier’s Signs designed a youthful look for the mascot, Mo the Eskymo, for the sign and window peels. Together they made Mo look youthful to cater to kindergartners at the school. The ‘e’ on the mascot’s sweater is a lowercase e instead of the uppercase E, with his arms open and inviting.

Besides some continuing work on the sign, new security window clings will continue to be installed in the spring. The security window clings allow students to look out the windows but make it hard for someone outside the building to look in. The design on the window peels also reflect the youthful mascot.

“The work is not 100 percent complete yet. We have to go back in the spring to install vinyl lettering because the application doesn’t work well in current temperatures,” McIntyre said. “As far as changing out, and building signage, work can be done any time of the year. Whatever the weather gives us is what we do that day,” McIntyre said.

If the wind is blowing, employees of Meier’s Signs work closer to the ground, or inside. While installing the Webster sign and window peels they had shelter, then stopped after the early snow.

“We changed out a few of the window peels on the south side of the building and will finish the others in the spring after the weather heats up,” said McIntyre.

The cabinet around the sign will be painted black and the window will be updated in the spring, according to McIntyre.

The sign was funded by a private donation in memory of Glenn Williams and the school district’s Public Improvement Fund. Glenn Williams was the father of a Title I assistant at Webster, Dana Williams. It will be maintained by the maintenance department and custodial staff at Webster, according to Johnson.
