Delta townships OK millage renewals

ESCANABA — Residents of Delta County townships supported a trio of millage renewal proposals during Tuesday’s election.

In Bay de Noc Township, 63 voters (63.64 percent) supported the renewal of a previously-approved increase on the tax limitation on general ad valorem taxes in the township at 1.5 mills ($1.50 per $1,000 of taxable value) for five years from 2020 to 2024, inclusive. A total of 36 voters (36.36 percent) were against the renewal.

The renewal will fund improvements to township roads and required maintenance, such as seal coating and snowplowing, for the Bay de Noc Township parking lot. It is expected to generate $43,924 in revenue.

Meanwhile, 64 votes (64.65 percent) were cast in favor of another millage proposal in Bay de Noc Township, which asked voters if they were in favor of renewing a previously-approved increase on the tax limitation on general ad valorem taxes in the township at 0.5 mills ($0.50 per $1,000 of taxable value) for five years from 2020 to 2024, inclusive. A total of 35 votes (35.35 percent) were cast against the renewal.

The renewal will be used for the township’s operating millage, and will generate $14,641 in its first year.

In Garden Township, voters were asked if they were in favor of renewing the tax limitation on general ad valorem taxes in the township at 1 mill ($1 per $1,000 of taxable value) for 10 years from 2020 to 2029, inclusive. 111 voters (64.16 percent) were in support of the request, while 62 voters (35.84 percent) were against it.

The millage renewal will fund the operation of and equipment for the Garden Township Fire Department. The township will raise $59,516 in the millage’s first year.
