Hiker who was found dead is identified

WETMORE — A hiker who was missing and later found dead at his campsite on McInnes Lake in Schoolcraft County earlier this week has been identified.

On Sept. 22, at around 8:20 p.m., Michigan State Police at the Manistique Outpost were notified of a missing hiker who had been camping in the Big Island Wilderness Area in northern Schoolcraft County. The hiker was by himself and was reported missing when he failed to return home.

Gregory Sutherland, 29, of Clarkston, Mich., was eventually found dead at his campsite by DNR officers.

Troopers said it appeared that Sutherland had an accident in which his leg was badly cut.

An autopsy was performed at UP Health Systems in Marquette and no foul play is suspected.

The Michigan State Police, Manistique Outpost was assisted by the Michigan DNR, Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Office, Inwood Township Fire Department, Thompson Township Fire Department and Alger County EMS.
