Annual event celebrates the outdoors

ESCANABA — The 10th annual ‘Re Creating in the Great Outdoors’ event will be held Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration will be at the Department of Natural Resources Pocket Park, located on the Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds.

Bays de Noc Gobblers Wheelin’ Sportsmen Program, Mix and Mingle Community Events and The Delta County Regional Inclusive Community Coalition (RICC) are hosting the event, providing accessible outdoor opportunities with demonstrations, education and exposure to outdoor and adaptive equipment.

“Any one can attend,” said volunteer Brenda Crow. “We only ask that if they need assistance, they have a person come along to assist them.”

Crow said they are expecting around 75 people to attend. Activities include target practice, fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing, and riding a pontoon boat. Adaptive equipment for target shooting, fishing, and kayaking will be available. Registration forms can be found at the Delta County Chamber of Commerce, Pathways, nursing homes across Escanaba and at the event.

“Bring the registration form and check or cash with you to the Pocket Park that morning,” said Crow.

Pre-registration is requested, but not required. Registrations will be taken up to the day of the event. There is a charge to take part. Each participant will receive a draw-string bag, lunch, and participation in the activities. Lunch will include sandwiches, salads, baked beans, chips, soda and desserts. It will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the DNR Pocket Park. All proceeds go back to the program.

“Scholarships are available,” Crow said. “We don’t want money to be an issue. If they just let us know it is unaffordable for them, and they would like participate and experience the activities, we can provide a scholarship for them.”

Crow is very thankful to the many sponsors helping with the event.

“We are very blessed to be in the community we live in,” noted Crow. “This will be a fun event for everyone to get out and explore.”
