Man receives jail term in stabbing case

ESCANABA — The man who was accused of stabbing and injuring another man in Escanaba earlier this year was sentenced by the Delta County Circuit Court recently.

Jonathan Michael Burke, 19, was sentenced to 12 months in jail and credited for 20 days already served. He will be placed on probation for 24 months. Included in his sentencing, Burke was ordered to pay $1,148 in fines and costs.

Burke pleaded guilty to one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, a 10-year felony, back in September.

Burke was arrested on May 18, 2018, after an investigation by Escanaba Public Safety into a stabbing incident reported to Delta County Central Dispatch shortly after 8 a.m. on the 300 block of South 9th Street.

Upon arrival, officers observed Burke with a knife outside his residence and apprehended him without incident. Officers also provided first aid to the victim, who suffered stab wounds to his chest and stomach.
