New drug dog for sheriff’s department

Jet

ESCANABA — The Delta County Sheriff’s Department is reinstating its K-9 program with the addition of a new drug dog that will join the agency later this year to assist in narcotics investigations.

“Jet,” a 15-month-old Dutch Shepherd from the Netherlands, arrived in Detroit on Friday, announced Sheriff Ed Oswald.

The dog will be transported to Marquette where retired Marquette City Police Department Lt. Marty Munger of Superior Oak Hill K-9 will train Jet to work with handler Jamie McDonough, a deputy with the Delta County Sheriff’s Department.

Munger was a K-9 handler for nearly 15 years and is a master trainer, said Oswald, noting Jet is expected to be on patrol in Delta County sometime in November.

The sheriff department’s new drug dog was purchased through individual donations and forfeiture funds received from money and vehicles seized in local narcotics investigations, explained Oswald.
