New firewood permits available
GLADSTONE — Need to gather firewood? With all existing permits set to expire on March 15, 2022, it’s time to get your new Personal Use Firewood Cutting Permit.
These non-commercial dead-and-down gathering permits cost $20 and are good for personal firewood gathering for one year from the date of purchase — or when the purchased cords have been gathered, whichever comes first. Permits are sold at Forest Service district offices; schedule an appointment by calling one of the district offices:

– St. Ignace or Sault Ste Marie Districts — (906) 643-7900 or (906) 241-7322

Have the following information on hand to obtain your permit:
– Full name
– Phone Number
– Driver’s license or other identification number and expiration date
– Address
– License plate number
Only standing dead and down trees may be gathered for firewood. Further guidelines for cutting will be provided with the permit. This authority applies only to non-commercial firewood cutting on Hiawatha National Forest system lands.
