History center plans ‘Capitol Women’ program

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Regional History Center presents: Capitol Women

Wednesday, Sept. 16, 6:30 p.m. in an online live presentation.

One hundred and fifty one years ago, on March 31, 1869, Harriet Tenney made history when she was appointed the first female state officer (the historical equivalent of a department director) in Michigan. Soon there were dozens of women working in the Capitol building as librarians, clerks, janitresses, and, starting in the 1920s, legislators.

Learn the stories of some of Michigan’s most significant early Capitol Women – including Marquette native Mary Hadrich, Secretary to Governor Chase Osborn; L’Anse native Cora Reynolds Anderson, Member Michigan House of Representatives; Harriet Tenney, State Librarian; Belle Maniates, Clerk and bestselling author; Eva McCall Hamilton, Member Michigan Senate; and Marie Ferrey, Clerk turned pioneer museum Curator. Capitol Historian and Curator Valerie Marvin will present live online to the Marquette Regional History Center.

A $5 donation is requested, Pre-registration for program required. Visit marquettehistory.org/things-to-do to register.
