Golf event to benefit Northern Lights YMCA

ESCANABA — State Wide Real Estate of Escanaba, Garceau Insurance Agency, Westbend Insurance and the Northern Lights YMCA are combining efforts to sponsor the Annual Golf Classic to be held at the Escanaba Country Club on Thursday, Aug. 6.

The effort will help the YMCA’s Annual Campaign, which supports direct financial assistance to low-income individuals and families to attend YMCA programs and become members.

The format for the outing is a four person scramble event with registration and lunch beginning at noon and a shotgun start beginning at 1 p.m. Hole and flight prizes will be awarded at a dinner following the event.

“We’re pleased to be partnering with the YMCA again in this event” said Dave Harris of State Wide. “It’s our 19th year doing this and it’s been fun working with the volunteers and knowing that we’re helping kids at the same time.”

The 18-hole event also features a luncheon and a dinner at the conclusion of the day of golf included in the participation fee. A silent auction, raffles and games are also held in conjunction with the event. “We have a nice selection of golf and non-golf items,” said Caron Salo of the YMCA, coordinator for the event. “So there’s something for everyone” she added.

Last year the YMCA’s Annual Campaign helped over 1,300 local individuals with direct financial assistance. It also helped subsidize more than 35 Y youth programs that did not cover all of their costs through participation fees. “The vast majority of our financial assistance recipients are kids” said Salo “But some seniors and special needs adults that are helped too” she added.
