MANISTIQUE — The annual Super Saturday Snowshoe event at the Manistique Township Environmental Education Lab will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, from 10 a.m. to noon. The free event is geared toward people of all ages, and there will be snowshoes on hand to borrow,loaned by the Manistique Area Schools.

The trails are being used regularly by snowshoers, which makes them easy to follow. Three new trails were added this past summer, constructed by a crew from the Great Lakes Conservation Corps of the Superior Watershed Partnership. One new trail begins just past the main entrance signs and connects the Main Trail to the back of the Hardwood Loop. A second trail starts a bit farther down the Main Trail and connects to the Bear Tree Loop. The third trail starts near the intersection of the Cut Across and Main Trail and also connects to the Bear Tree Loop. The new trails do not have permanent markers installed yet, but they have been re-flagged for clarity.

Big improvements are being planned at the lab. Money from the December 2017 timber sale, along with a gravel donation from Carmeuse and volunteer labor time, will be used as local match for the $63,400 MI Recreation Passport Grant that the lab recently received. The most important feature of the project will be making a portion of the trails accessible to more people by widening them and adding a wheelchair-friendly pathway mix from Carmeuse.

The Environmental Lab is located on 80 acres at the end of Krummich Road in Manistique Township. From US-2 turn north onto the River Road, go one mile and turn left on Krummich Road (where the big powerline crosses). After one mile, Krummich takes a sharp left.
