Bay College Film Series sets winter schedule

ESCANABA — The Bay Film Series at Bay College has announced its winter schedule.

The series starts with the award-winning bio-pic Harriet on Thursday, Jan. 23. Actress Cynthia Erivo has been nominated for Best Actress. The movie tells the inspiring story of Harriet Tubman’s life from slavery to becoming one of America’s most enduring heroes.

The second film, on Feb. 13, coordinates with the 100 Years of Suffrage Celebration, honoring the centennial of women’s right to vote in the U.S. The Woman Who Loves Giraffes highlights the life and work of biologist Anne Innis Dagg whose solo trip into the wilds of South Africa to study giraffes in the mid-50s was unprecedented for a female scientist.

On Feb. 27, the Oscar-nominated film Parasite will be shown. It has been nominated in six categories including Best Picture, Best Foreign Film, and Best Director.

In March, the series celebrates film and women’s history with the documentary Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blache. Blache created the first narrative short in the Silent Era, becoming the world’s first director. She went on to a varied and illustrious career, helping to create movies and the movie industry. Then, suddenly, devalued and censored by the sexism of her time, she disappears from the record. The film is narrated by Jodie Foster.

The title for April 16 will be announced at a future date.

All film series movies are shown in Bay College’s Besse Center Theater at 7 p.m. in Escanaba. Tickets are available at the box office or can be purchased online. Students with valid ID can get a reduced admission charge.
