Man gets prison for vehicle theft

ESCANABA — An Escanaba man was sentenced to a minimum of one year and 11 months in prison in Delta County Circuit Court recently for stealing a vehicle last summer.

Todd Stephen Williams, 52, of Escanaba, pleaded no contest to one count larceny by conversion – $1,000 or more but less than $20,000.

He was sentenced to one year and 11 months to five years in prison. Williams was on parole from a prior larceny charge and his sentence will be served consecutively to his prior offense.

According to the prosecutor’s office, on Aug. 25, 2018, Gladstone Public Safety Department officers responded to the report of a stolen vehicle.

The vehicle owner reported he had posted the vehicle for sale on Facebook and a man responded to the posting. The man then took the vehicle for a test ride and never returned.

During GPSD’s investigation, Williams was identified as the suspect through the use of surveillance cameras and information provided by citizens.

During interrogation, Williams admitted he took the vehicle and was high on drugs during the incident.

The vehicle was recovered.

Williams was ordered to pay $6,662.33 in restitution and $198 in fines and costs.
