Gladstone Homecoming underway

GLADSTONE — Several different events are taking place in Gladstone this week as part of Gladstone Area High School’s homecoming.

During the week, Gladstone’s high school students have been participating in a variety of dress-up days. On Monday, students wore the colors their class wore to the powder puff football game on Sunday — pink for freshmen, blue for sophomores, red for juniors, and black for seniors. Tuesday was “Mathlete vs. Athlete Day,” and Wednesday was “Meme/Vine Day.”

Today, students will dress up for the overall theme of Gladstone’s homecoming this year — video games.

“We’re having students dress up as their theme,” Gladstone Area High School Assistant Principal/Athletic Director Andrew Jacques said. Students in each class will wear costumes representing games chosen for their grade — Minecraft for freshmen, Lego for sophomores, Pokemon for juniors, and Mario for seniors.

On Friday, Gladstone students will show their school spirit by wearing purple and white.

Friday evening, Gladstone’s homecoming parade will take place.

“From 5:30 through about 6:15 (p.m.) … we are having our parade,” Jacques said. The parade will start at 13th Street and Minnesota Avenue, and will then go down 13th Street to Minneapolis Avenue and down Minneapolis Avenue to the football field.

Between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. Friday, people in the area will be able to take part in a Braves community picnic at the practice field.

“It’s a float viewing and picnic,” Jacques said. Free hot dogs, chips, and soda will be provided to attendees; people at this event will be able to vote for their favorite float by making a canned food donation. The float with the most donations will win People’s Choice, and the donations will be given to the Salvation Army.

The varsity football game, in which the Braves will play the Maple City Glen Lake Lakers, is set to start at 7 p.m. Friday. Gladstone’s homecoming king and queen will be announced at halftime during this game.

On Saturday, a dance will be held at the high school from 8 to 11 p.m.
