ESCANABA — This month’s Music Maker of the Month is Christopher Wolf.

Christopher Wolf, age 48, says he’s “been playing music since I was 10. My first instrument was the accordion because my dad played.” Later on, Chris learned how to play trumpet. “My first public performance was at the Town Hall for 4-H. I was trying to raise the music stand [but] it was stuck. Then it let loose. Papers [flew] everywhere,” prompting lots of laughs from the audience.

He turned his attention to learning guitar after watching his cousin Ted’s band perform. “My first electric guitar was The Terminator by Synsonics, bought at Shopko for $67.” In 2005, he set his sights on playing the “upright bass after watching a performance by Charles Mingus.”

Chris prefers jazz and rock genres and has “a passion for Chicago blues. I moved to Milwaukee to study at the Conservatory of Music. At the same time, I was playing with local orchestras at places like the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Italian Convention Center, Four Points Sheraton Grand Ballroom, etc. The musical highlight of my life was performing at Buddy Guy’s Legends – a great, great place!”

“I have been on hiatus, taking care of an ill family member. I’m just now getting back into the music scene, so no gigs scheduled.” At least not yet. He’s “looking for a jazz gig or anything orchestral.”
