Michigan Education Association scholarships

Jordan Marenger

ESCANABA — The 17B Coordinating Council of the Michigan Education Association (MEA) recently awarded a pair of $250 scholarships to two local students. This year’s recipients were Jordan Marenger, of Escanaba High School, and Brody Waara, of Menominee High School.

Marenger, a member of Key Club and National Honor Society, was also dually-enrolled at Bay College where she will continue her studies this fall in pursuit of a career as an MRI technologist. Waara, a three sport-athlete and member of both National Honor Society and Business Professionals of America, will attend Northern Michigan University in the fall, majoring in education. Both students share a love for the Upper Peninsula and state that their respective career paths will lead them “home.”

The 17B Council is the MEA’s local union affiliate. To be eligible for the monetary award, funded entirely by local dues allocation, a student must be the child or dependent of an active MEA union member in good standing. Marenger is the daughter of Diane Marenger, member of the Delta-Schoolcraft ISD Support Staff Association. Waara’s father, Ron Waara, is a Stephenson Education Association member.
