Escanaba boys take first place at Gladstone Invite

GLADSTONE — It was a tight race for the boys’ track and field title here Thursday as the Escanaba boys became repeat winners in the Gladstone Invitational by edging Rapid River 137-134. The host Braves placed third with 125 points. The Gladstone girls won for the fourth consecutive time with 172 points. They were followed by Manistique 157 and Esky 79. Braves rally to defeat Knights

NORWAY — After having their game against Norway postponed a day and moved to Norway, the Gladstone Braves took the diamond looking for their second win of the season and got it, defeating the Knights 10-6 here Wednesday. The Braves got to work quickly as they scored three runs in the top of the first inning as Aiden Burie, Cooper Sanville and Carter Sanville all drew walks to load the bases. Optimism is brewing for Escanaba boys track team

ESCANABA — They may be a little young, but there is optimism brewing among the ranks of the Escanaba boys’ track and field team as it begins a new season. Esky, which opens in today’s Gladstone Invitational at 3:30, has 28 on its roster. “We have a strong turnout among our younger guys,” coach Scott Dykema says. “Some of the juniors moved over from baseball and our underclassmen are pretty athletic. ESCANABA — With low numbers and having a very young track and field team the Escanaba girls figure to be rebuilding this season. The Eskymos, who open in Thursday’s Gladstone Invitational, have 13 on their roster which includes 11 underclassmen. Gone through graduation is Alisha Mabie, who’s running cross country and track at Northern Michigan University. Esky’s lone senior is Giada Frau, an exchange student from Italy, who’s entered in the sprints.
