A celebration of Labor

I come from a family where strong Labor and Union values were instilled from as long as I can remember. We were a proud Union home during my growing-up years, and I have been a proud Union member whenever I have had the chance to be part of a Union. My dad understood the value of labor in America both before and after World War II. As a kid, I remember the Union where he worked going out on strike and just how much he believed in what American Labor and his Union offered to him as he continued to work hard to provide for his family. During this time of celebrating workers in America ...

Delta Airlines is reliable

Kudos to Gilbert Cheves' letter to the editor Wednesday, Aug. 13. He nailed it on the head. Why was no public input provided to allow we the citizens of Delta County to express a preference as to which airline carrier should serve our local airport? Delta Airlines by far has the best scheduling and reliability. To go with higher-cost Denver Air Connection and LESS reliable scheduling would be a major mistake. The ill-advised, and non-public action taken by the Airport Board must be revisited and then rescinded.

Faults county board’s actions

This letter is about the editorial (July 21) titled “Government doesn’t work without citizen participation.” Stated “that in small-town America, governance requires participation, collaboration and a variety of viewpoints to get the job done.” I can’t agree more. But in Delta County we have county commissioners who either drive out individuals on citizen boards/commissions and/or employees. Why? Because they have their own personal agendas to push through on an unsuspecting public. They do this by handpicking individuals to represent the public who either don’t question ...

Air carriers

EDITOR: In response to the July 17 article, “Delta County Airport Seeks More Destinations,” it was disappointing to read that “Delta County has decided to change air carriers providing essential service at the Delta County Airport.” This is the first I am reading or hearing of this and that the decision has already been made. I have not read of any public hearings regarding this and question the benefits of the decision. I do a significant amount of business and personal travel out of our Escanaba Airport, and having direct access to Delta, a major carrier, provides ...

Who are you?

EDITOR: The Monk who answers the door at a Monastery is known as the Porter. A very important position in the Monastery, as he is the representative of this prayerful community to the outside world. Most people when asked, “who are you” will likely answer with your name, perhaps what you do for a living, whether you are married and have a family, etc. However, this past Sunday Pastor Tim asked us, “who are you” and he didn't want to know our name, occupation, what we've done or accomplished...rather he wanted to know who we really are. Of course, he was referring to our ...

Immigration

EDITOR: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses earning to be free” The wretched refuse of your teaming shore” and we will have you arrested by masked men, thrown on to airplanes with no representations and flown to prisons in some alligator infested swamp or flown to other countries you never heard of. Is this what Ronald Reagan referred to in his speech? Is this what our shining light of democracy and a beacon of hope for all people and nations to be free and to live in peace? My own father lived the American dream coming to this country from Switzerland at is ...
