Council ORV decision not good for Escanaba

EDITOR: I am writing in regards to the Escanaba City Council decision to allow off-road vehicles onto the city streets of Escanaba. To the members of the council that voted in favor, I ask a simple question: How many residents of Escanaba will use this new “privilege” to ride their ORVs on the city streets? I predict very few, less than 100-200 city residents are owners of ORVs, while the remaining 11,800 will have to put up with it. These vehicles are built for off road use, not on streets in historic neighborhoods where kids live and play and people walk their dogs. On a ...

Support for Ukraine

EDITOR: How wonderful that in America we can feel so opposite of one another, yet be united under one flag! I was thrilled to see the initiative of people to hang the colors of Ukraine. I have felt aligned with the Ukrainians since this war started. My alliance comes with feelings of justice and a desire for all humanity to be at peace. Please note that Ukrainian flags were not put on poles or streetlights. The definition of a flag is: a piece of CLOTH which can be attached to a pole and which is used as a sign, or symbol of something, especially a county. These were plastic wraps ...

Thank you Escanaba City Council and citizens

EDITOR: This second letter of mine is just to personally thank the citizens of Escanaba and surrounding areas for really stepping it up and making it to the Escanaba City Council meeting to show support for the Escanaba Public Library. The fact that the people of Escanaba turned a board meeting into a standing room only, no parking places left, local news station taping just says so much about our wonderful city, employees, and most of all our citizens. That is the exceptionally great part about it, the fact that we made our voices peaceable heard on this particularly important issue. ...

Ukraine flags

EDITOR: Recent tours around Lakeshore Drive and Ludington Street reveal the blue and gold colors of Ukraine. The ribbons are fixed to most of the light poles along the path. Am I to understand that the City of Escanaba is endorsing some sort of political stance on the ongoing war in Ukraine? Was this installation approved by city officials? Was permission sought and received by whomever fixed these ribbons on the light posts? How long will they remain there? Will city dollars have to be spent to remove them? The war in Ukraine is an atrocity. However, the situation is not without ...

Library cut a mistake

EDITOR: For about two years I had the pleasure of being employed by the Escanaba Public Library. During my time there, I saw first hand the value that the library gave to the community it served. I watched people use the computers and internet access to find jobs, do schoolwork, and connect with family members. I helped cancer patients find books and websites that empowered them to make difficult decisions. I watched families bond over books and struggling teens find a safe place to decompress. It was a safe place for the seeking, lonely, and confused. It was a bright spot for the ...
