Recent tours around Lakeshore Drive and Ludington Street reveal the blue and gold colors of Ukraine. The ribbons are fixed to most of the light poles along the path. Am I to understand that the City of Escanaba is endorsing some sort of political stance on the ongoing war in Ukraine? Was this installation approved by city officials? Was permission sought and received by whomever fixed these ribbons on the light posts? How long will they remain there? Will city dollars have to be spent to remove them? The war in Ukraine is an atrocity. However, the situation is not without nuance. At most the city government of Escanaba should be neutral. In my mind I have no choice but to support Ukraine and hope for a speedy end to the war. Consequently I find political statements like these colors, placed on public property, to be highly inappropriate. Place the ribbons on your own private property. Leave them off the public grounds.
