Recall effort

EDITOR: I would like to express my utmost pride in the residents of Delta County. On October 5th, Citizens for Ethical Leadership submitted 1,235 signatures for the recall of Commissioner Barron (we needed 1001). The support shown while circulating recall petitions was overwhelming. Many citizens sought us out by attending public signing events, sending emails and texts and making phone calls. While soliciting door to door, we were warmly welcomed. To give you an example, in Escanaba Township alone, almost 50% of registered voters signed the recall. I especially want to thank the ...

A letter to the nonreligious

EDITOR: Today’s (Tuesday, October 10) Daily Press had an AP article by Peter Smith on the rise of the nonreligious in the United States. As pastor of St. Joseph & St. Patrick Church here in Escanaba, I can assure you that that trend is a common topic of conversation among priests and ministers and others engaged with religion. As a priest, I first want to say, I’m sorry. It is, to a great extent, our fault. We have done a poor job explaining what it is that the Church has to offer. Sometimes we’ve allowed ourselves to be distracted by the crass realities of keeping a roof ...

Israel and Iran

EDITOR: When we change to Daylight Savings Time, we gain an extra hour of daylight, or so it is believed. This simply changes the clock, not the number of hours of light during the day. A similar fallacy is now playing out in the attacks on Israel with the backing of Iran. We provide billions of dollars to the Iranian government with the promise (by them) it will be used for “humanitarian” purposes. Supposedly there is a means for accounting for the disposition of these specific dollars. However, this simply frees up billions more for Iran to use in its terrorist funding of attacks ...

Raffle to benefit Delta County Cancer Alliance

EDITOR: Over the past three years I have had the privilege to be a part of the Delta County Cancer Alliance located here in Escanaba and serving all of Delta County. I will say my participation in this Alliance has been very humbling. This non-profit organization has served thousands of local cancer patients and assists over one hundred new patients yearly. And this task is being accomplished by all volunteers. We have 40 plus volunteers who faithfully run the office Monday through Friday afternoons to serve our clients in need. We also have a dedicated board of directors who work ...

Illegal immigration

EDITOR: The autumnal equinox has passed, and fall is upon us. Leaves are turning color and there is a nip in the air. Some parts of the U.P. have already had frost. Time to shake the mothballs out of the warm-woolies. Consider this scenario... A couple bus loads of perhaps 100 illegal aliens each pull into downtown Escanaba… “here ya go! Welcome to da U.P.” If you have watched the thousands of people illegally crossing our southern border (10K yesterday I’ve heard), you’ve noticed they have no possessions and minimal ability at best to communicate. Might as well be naked ...

Illegal immigration

EDITOR: I am old enough to remember Walter Cronkite, the Huntley/Brinkley report, and I was in my teens when Watergate happened. We watched the “news” back then and most everything was pretty straightforward. Now, we have the “news” media that is split; liberal and conservative. For this, I will use CNN/MSNBC as the liberals, and Newsmax/Fox as the conservatives. If you watch the majority of CNN/MSNBC, you will hear every Democrat politician and pundit spout the same talking points and probably never hear about some of the negative stuff. If you watch Newsmax/Fox, you get the ...
