Existential threat

EDITOR:

Some people learned a new word. One that sounds scary. Existential – relating to existence. It is really an overused word that one would use to sound smart. If you are old enough to remember Howard Cosell, it would be one of his favorite words right now. The media loves the word. Every story that comes along, has an existential feel about it. “Climate change is an existential threat to the globe.” “Donald Trump is an existential threat to the country.” “The war in Ukraine will expand and become an existential threat.” “Israel is an existential threat to the ‘peaceful’ folks in the Middle East.” For example.

Climate change. The permafrost is melting in northern Russia and the Arctic. Iceland is melting. New York City will be under water by 2020. Oops, missed that one. I would have thought I would see folks bailing water and pumps trying to clear the low-lying streets. That didn’t happen.

Donald Trump. How much more can honest people stand by and let people trash this man? The “Big Lie.” Nobody can tell me what that “lie” was. Trump is like Hitler to the left. If he wins it will be the end of this country as we know it. Existential threat.

War in Ukraine will expand and we will be in WW3. First of all, neither side has anything left. Russia has lost far too many men. Unless the warmongers in Congress send more money, Ukraine is broke. Neither side wins.

I actually heard a Democrat strategist say that if Trump were elected, again, that he would do away with the elections and refuse to step down, becoming a dictator. Did he do that the last time he was president? Did he indict his opponent and try to put him in prison? Did he have a “hit squad” roaming the streets looking for Democrats to destroy? Was he once an existential threat to this country? Was global warming, Sorry, climate change an existential threat to the world back in 1974? Nobody fried from the ozone hole. This climate change caused all of the private jets from taking off Sunday to the climate convention in Dubai. It has warmed up so much that the snow delayed the airplanes.

I remember how we felt on 9/11. I remember “We Are The World”, Live Aid, Farm Aid, and the first one, Band Aid, started by Bob Geldof. Where is this generation’s Bob Geldof?
