Gladstone dominates at U.P. wrestling championship meet
MARQUETTE — The Gladstone Braves didn’t let anything stand in their way here Saturday as they ran away with the Upper Peninsula wrestling championship with 224½ points.
They were followed by Escanaba 147, Sault Ste. Marie 139, Marquette 132½ and last year’s champ Kingsford 120½.
Gladstone qualified five for the title round of which four were crowned champions.
“This was a pretty good day for us,” Braves’ coach Ryan Harrenstein said. “The guys are hungry. Not winning last year left a sour taste in our mouth. We’re building. I think the best of Gladstone wrestling is yet to come.”
Braves’ junior Nathan Beauchamp pinned Negaunee senior Devin Jurmu 49 seconds into the 150-pound final for his first U.P. title.
“It was nerve wracking up to the last moment, but it was definitely well worth it,” Beauchamp said. “This is a pretty big confidence builder. Coming in here as the No. 1 seed creates a lot of added pressure.”
Gladstone junior Jack Taylor also won for the first time at 165 where he took a 6-0 decision from Kingsford junior Tyler Bray.
“I did my usual warm-up and wanted to make sure I wrestled good,” Taylor said. “I also wanted to make sure I was mentally ready. My uncle wrestled when he was younger and was a U.P. champion. I’ve been working hard in practice. I was after it today.”
Junior Ben Wilson provided Gladstone with its third individual championship by taking a 1-0 decision from Bark River-Harris junior Mitch Corrigan in the 215 title bout.
Gladstone senior Trevor Thorbahn then needed just 55 seconds to pin Kingsford junior Connor White at 285.
Braves’ junior Ryder Forvilly also reached the championship round at 190 where he got pinned in 2:53 by Sault senior Marc DeWildt.
Junior Landon Weber (126) became the first Manistique grappler in nine years to be crowned U.P. champion, taking a 3-0 decision from Ishpeming Westwood junior Caleb Christesen.
“It’s awesome to be a U.P. champion,” Weber said. “Staying hydrated was key. After the takedown it was all defense. This definitely gives me momentum. He’s a tough wrestler. I knew it was going to be a challenge.”
Classmate Grayden Holt reached the 132 final where he dropped a 14-5 decision to Gwinn freshman Evan Stachweicz.
“Grayden had a good match against Evan from Gwinn,” Emeralds’ coach Mat Gonzalez said. “We had a couple guys in the finals. It was a good run. Right now we’re down to seven wrestlers, but we expect to have eight new freshmen next year which should help us.”
Powers North Central freshman Praxton Labonte (106) led off the title round, using a chicken wing to pin Marquette junior Levi Ellis at 2:35.
“I had a lot of nerves coming in here,” Labonte said. “It took a lot of hard work and good coaching to get me here and getting the other meets in helped me get conditioned. I think everything went pretty well.”
North Central junior Cooper Raab reached the 138 final where he dropped a 19-9 decision to Menominee junior Caleb Barstow.
Esky sophomore Haidyn Denis got to the title bout at 175 where he lost by technical fall (15-0) to Kingsford junior Max Sundquist.
“We wrestled hard in the back side of the bracket and got a lot of pins,” Esky coach John Rogers said. “I think this is absolutely encouraging. This gives us something to build on.”
Area third-place finishers were Gladstone sophomore Cole Carlson (113), Esky senior Cody Crowe (126), freshman Cash Kenneally (132) and sophomore Corey Smithingell (138) and North Central sophomores Pryar Labonte (150) and Myles Nehring (215).
Those taking fourth include Gladstone junior Drew Baldovski (120), freshman Gabe Carlson (126) and Wyatt Forvilly (144) and BR-H senior Charles Walker (285).
Also reaching the podium were area fifth-place finishers, including Esky freshman Connor McClellan (113) and juniors Dustin Skerbeck (150) and Zahn Anderson (285) and Gladstone sophomore Nick Proehl (157).
Manistique travels to Westwood for a triangular meet and North Central visits Iron Mountain for a quadrangular Tuesday.
Esky goes to Menominee for a quadrangular meet Wednesday and will join Gladstone, Manistique, BR-H and North Central in the Northern Michigan Championships at Gaylord Saturday.
