KINGSFORD — February 13, 2020 was the date in history as the last time the Gladstone Braves defeated the Kingsford Flivvers. That date changed last night as the Braves held on for a thrilling 46-44 victory over the Flivvers here Thursday.

Will Inghram had 16 and 10 rebounds with two blocks and two steals including the game-winning basket late in the fourth quarter.

“It was a great game,” Inghram said. “We all played well as a team and just locked in at the end and it was a great call to throw in the zone there which kind of threw them off.”

Gladstone jumped out to an early 6-0 lead on a layup by junior Lonnie Davey. Kingsford junior Jett Buckley hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 6-2. Inghram had a pair of layups to put the Braves up 10-4.

Kingsford answered with a 10-0 run to take a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter highlighted by a 3-pointer from Owen Olkkonen as well as a powerful drive to the basket for a layup and the foul Olkkonen had six of his 15 points in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Kingsford senior Matthew Sundquist went to the basket for a layup to put the Flivvers up 16-12.

Inghram answered, scoring back-to-back layups for the Braves to tie the game at 16.

“This was a huge team win for us,” Braves coach Jake Kiesby said. “Lonnie struggled tonight, and I think Will stepped up and embraced his role, hit some big shots and Braidyn Miron and Tre Brunette were big for us on the defensive side of the ball getting deflections and getting us some easy transition baskets.”

Sundquist spit a pair of free throws and Olkkonen added a layup to put the Flivvers back on top 19-16.

Gladstone freshman Alex Prins came up with a steal and threw a nice pass to Davey for a layup to cut the deficit to 19-18.

The Flivvers got a 3-pointer from Buckley to stretch the lead to 22-18.

Davey found his way to the basket for a layup and Inghram split a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 22-21.

Kingsford senior Jack Kriegl knocked down a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 24-23.

Prins came up with another steal and took it to the basket for a layup to cut the Flivvers lead to 24-23 at halftime.

Sundquist put the Flivvers up by three coming out of the break on a layup. The Braves responded with a 3-pointer by Prins to tie the game at 26.

Kingsford took the lead back at 29-28 as Buckley split a pair of free throws. The Flivvers scored six of the next eight points to extend the lead to 35-30. But Davey connected on a fadeaway jumper at the buzzer to cut the deficit to 35-32.

The fourth quarter in large part was owned by the Braves as they started the quarter on a 10-2 run highlighted by layups by Teagan Reynolds and Tre Brunette as well as going 6-6 from the free throw line during that time and forcing six of Kingsford’s 19 turnovers during that stretch to take a 42-37 lead..

“We have some stuff to figure out right now,” Kingsford coach Ben Olson said. “I don’t think we are sharing the basketball as much as we could. I don’t think it’s selfishness I just think it’s kids trying to make plays but we gotta know when to make those plays. Turnovers hurt us. We have been hitting these perfect storms this season to get back in games and tonight one of them hit us. Now we have to work hard to get back to where we want to be.”

The Flivvers answered with a 7-0 run highlighted by a 3-pointer by Olkkonen and layups by Sunquist and Kriegl to put the Flivvers back up 44-42.

Prins hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 44. Kingsford was called for an offensive foul to give the ball back to the Braves. Prins worked through the zone and found Inghram for the game-winning layup.

“This win gives our team a huge boost of confidence and the ability to know we can play with anyone and compete for a district title on a year-to-year basis.

The Braves return to action Tuesday as they travel to Gwinn.
