Eskymos finish fourth at U.P. Tennis Finals

WESTWOOD — The Escanaba girls tennis team finished in fourth place at the U.P. Tennis Finals in Westwood with five points here Wednesday. Negaunee won the U.P. Finals with 19 points just edging Westwood who finished with 18 points. Marquette was third with six points and finishing behind Escanaba was Kingsford who finished fifth with four points and Gladstone and Menominee each finished with two points.

The Eskymos best performance of the day came at No. 1 doubles as Aubrey Elliott and Brooklyn Hackelman won their semi-final match over Kaylin Doney and Niila Nurmi of Westwood 6-, 6-3, to advance to the finals against Negaunee where they lost in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Escanaba made it to the semifinals in the other three doubles matches. At No. 2, doubles Sophie Hill and Isabella Noblet knocked off Marquette’s Kylie Smith and Logan McFarren 6-3, 7-5 before losing to Westwood.

At No. 3 doubles, Escanaba’s Hailee Cloutier and Claire Jacobsen got an opening round win over Gladstone’s Miranda Drielick and Elenore Mathias 6-1, 6-2.

At No. 4 doubles, Escanaba’s Carly Gorenchan and Katie Kievit defeated Gladstone’s Brihanna Wetthuhn and Taylor Hastings 6-0, 6-1 before falling to Negaunee in the semifinals.

The Braves also had a pair of wins in singles action as Tati Martinez picked up a win over Menominee’s Madalyn Mosey at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-4 and Madison Sundquist won an opening round match against Kingsford’s Chloe Lanning 6-0, 6-2.
