Gladstone looks to build on solid start to 2025 CC season
GLADSTONE — After two solid outings the Gladstone boys are looking forward to seeing what the rest of this cross country season has to offer.
The Braves won the Larissa Vartti Invitational at Munising Aug. 19 and placed fourth in Thursday’s Dale Phillips Invite in Marquette.
They resume in today’s Menominee Border Bash at North Shore Golf Club near Menominee at 4:30 p.m.
“The kids have shown a lot of improvement,” coach Gary Whitmer said. “The seniors have been here for four years and they’ve stepped up.”
The Braves have plenty of experience with nine upperclassmen on their team of 17.
Senior returners include Max Beauchamp, Austin Corey, Matt Hagenbusch, Grady Nelson, Teagan Reynolds, Tyler Soderman and Cole Williams.
Juniors are Chuck Cameron and Cristian Hayen.
Nelson was runner-up to Stephenson senior Cannon Kuntze at Munising with Reynolds leading the Braves with a top 20 finish at Marquette.
“Our senior leadership is very important and our juniors will be on varsity,” Whitmer said. “It’s kind of nice that our top 9-10 runners are going to get to run with each other. Matt has a lot of potential. We definitely have some depth.”
Freshman Jack Prins is setting the pace among the underclassmen.
“Jack has been in the middle of the pack with the varsity,” Whitmer said. “He’s getting stronger. I think he’ll be on varsity.”
Additional underclassmen include sophomores Alex Beauchamp, Mason Couvillion, Jacob Freel, Tony Pelish and Chase Tackman and freshmen Corbin Lowry and Jake Lanaville.
The girls have seven on their team.
“Joselyn Mills (junior) and Peyton Takkunen (senior) are the leaders right now and Lexi Gilbert (senior) gives us another solid runner,” Whitmer said. “We hope to have more as the season goes on.”
Joining them are seniors Yazmine Barrios and Sofia Vega and freshmen Chloe Cameron and Natalie King.
The Braves were runners-up to Cheboygan by two points at Munising, but had only three available runners at Marquette.
After today’s meet, the Braves resume in the Bay College Invitational on their home course at Flat Rock and continue in the Manistique Invite Sept. 10.
