Escanaba Cubs earn weekend sweep over Appleton

ESCANABA — A well rounded team effort once again paid off for the Escanaba Cubs as it swept Appleton Post 38 in a baseball doubleheader hers Saturday. The Cubs won game one 3-2 and took the second game 6-1.
Dr. Tom Fisher was in attendance to throw out the opening pitch. Fisher was a member of the Cubs teams from 1983-1985 and was an integral part of them winning the zone tournament against the Sault Travelers.
Game One
The Cubs wasted no time as they got on the board in the bottom of the first inning Adrian Mercier singled and Bon LaChance drew a walk to put runners on first and second with one out. Ashton Rymkos hit a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead.
“We are playing really good baseball,” Cubs coach Paul LaChance said. “We have 10 guys who work hard and really want to be here. They are putting in the time in the cage working on their throws and they are really taking charge out there.”
The Cubs added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning as Bon LaChance had an RBI double and then later scored on a single by Cannon Arnt, extending the lead to 3-0.
Appleton scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning but that is all the could muster against the Cubs.
Bon LaChance got the win, allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Eli Gardner earned the save as he allowed zero runs on zero hits with one strikeout and a walk.
“We knew we had a run to work with,” Gardner said. “I was just trying to throw strikes and keep command of my fastball and just focused on getting the outs.”
Game Two
The Cubs ran away with game two as they scored four runs on four hits in the first inning highlighted by RBI-doubles by Bon LaChance and Rymkos to take a 4-0 lead.
“We are a gritty group of 10 guys,” Bon LaChance said. “We play our best baseball when we work together like we have so far this season.”
Arnt earned the win allowing one run on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Isaiah Brow came into the game for the last inning and allowed zero runs and struck out two.
“Cannon and Isaiah pitched well,” Paul LaChance said. “Isaiah hasn’t pitched in a year, so we are working him in an inning here and there to get him up to speed.”
The Cubs will be in action this weekend as they host the Greg Johnson/Al Erickson Memorial Tournament with games at Al Ness Field and at Bay College Field.
