Esky baseball earns sweep over Blue Devils

ESCANABA — A Wednesday baseball doubleheader saw Escanaba sweep Sault Ste. Marie, winning game one 13-12 and game two 12-1.

With the wins Escanaba junior Lennox Peacock and sophomore Brody Ison came in tied for the season record for triples with three each. They both now sit tied with five triples after Wednesday’s action.

“Me and Brody were talking in class earlier about we were going to break it,” Peacock said. ” I’m just happy we both broke the original record which is pretty special.”

Game one came right down to the wire as Nolan Bink hit an RBI-single to give the Eskymos the walk-off victory in extra innings. Bink drove in four runners in game one and went 3 for 5 at the plate.

Ryker Medrick got the Blue Devils on the board first on a RBI-single to give them a 1-0 lead.

Escanaba responded with eight runs in the bottom of the first inning including a two-run single by Bink.

The Blue Devils captured the lead, in the top of the fourth as Mike Morse drew a walk, scoring a run, and Jonathan Schupp singled bringing in two runs as the Sault took the lead at 10-8.

The Eskymos regained the lead at 11-10 in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single by Ison. The game was tied at 12 as it went to extra innings. Carter Samuelson gave the Blue Devils the lead on an RBI-single in the top of the seventh.

Joey Garcia got the win for the Eskymos, allowing two runs on three hits in four innings of work.

The Eskymos defense was excellent behind Garcia as Peacock turned a pair of double plays in the game.

“I pride myself on my fielding,” Peacock said. “I really like it when the defense has my back, so I like to be there to have my guys back out there”

In game two, the Blue Devils again jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a RBI-double.

The Eskymos responded in the bottom of the first as Ashton Rymkos singled and Peacock hit an RBI-triple to tie the game at one. The triple for Peacock tied him with Ison at four after Ison’s triple in game one.

The Eskymos took the lead at 2-1 on a single by Mikaiden Hughes that brought in Peacock. In the bottom of second Peacock tripled again scoring a run and moving ahead of Ison with his fifth triple of the season.

In the bottom of the third the Eskymos added nine runs highlighted by a lead-off triple for Ison tying him with Peacock at five and a two-run double by Max LeDuc.

“This really gets the dugout going,” Ison said. “It gets the team pumped up and really gets the atmosphere going pretty high for the guys and we are paying it off with wins so it’s great.”

Joey Garcia came back and picked up the win in game two allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.

“Joey did a good job for us,” Eskymos’ coach Scott Hanson said. “He has gotten better every time out and is really gaining confidence in his game.”
