April 16, 1979 — Wilson Leo’s Mobil squeezed past Traverse City Sugarfoot Saloon 74-73 in the Class A championship game of the Negaunee Invitational basketball tournament. Former Lake Superior State and Ewen-Trout Creek graduate Gary Fors and Dave Corcoran hit 24 points apiece for Leo’s. Bob Fowler, the tourney’s Most Valuable Player scored 30 for Sugarfoot Saloon.

Class D MVP Mike Osier tossed in 25 points as Escanaba Red-White-Blue upset Crystal Falls McNeil’s Oilers 90-85 in another title contest. Mike Cousineau added 18 and Jim Shandonay joined them on the all-touranment team. Bryan LaChappelle led the Oilers with 21 and Gladstone graduate and former Newberry coach Cliff Young had 18.

April 17, 1979 — Bill Rodgers set the course record in the 83rd Annual Boston Maration in 2:09:27, shaving 28 seconds off his previous record from 1975.

Ten Upper Peninsula runners also finished the 26.2-mile course from Hopkinton, Mass. to downtown Boston, led by John LeClaire of Baraga at 2:44. He was followed by Bob Olson of Hancock (2:46), Northern Michigan University cross country coach James Fernandez (2:52), Jim Godell of Marquette (2:58), John Vrancic of Escanaba (3:08:01), Bob Stones of Hancock (3:10), Bob Figuli of Marquette (3:16), Al Pardini of Houghton (3:20), Marquette High School ski coach Bill Albrecht (3:23) and Don Hansen of Marquette (3:25).
